Common Fairy Tale Elements

Common Elements of Fairy Tales
1. A fairy tale begins with "Once upon a time..."
2. Fairy tales happen in the long ago.
3. Fairy Tales have fantasy and make believe in them.
4. Fairy Tales have clearly defined Good characters vs. Evil characters.
5. Royalty is usually present in a fairy tale, a beautiful princess/handsome prince.
6. There may be magic with giants, elves, talking animals, witches or fairies. 7. Fairy tales have a problem that needs to be solved.
8. It often takes three tries to solve the problem.
9. Fairy tales have happy endings – "they all lived happily ever after."
10. Fairy tales usually teach a lesson or have a theme.

Now you decide: what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale? What are the characteristics? What do the heroes look like? What does the setting look like, etc?

  2. Fairy tales always talk about true love which pretty much breaks any spell known to man... It always teaches you a lesson about values and morals... STAND UP for what you believe in.

    The heroes are very beautiful or handsome. They are quirky, smart, and brave.

    The setting is a beautiful village or town and sometimes it has royalty in the center of the town.. Or it's the woods.

What makes a fairytale a fairytale are the characters: royalty, magical animals that speak, the evil family member, etc. The heroes are princes, strong, magestic, rich, handsome, caring, everything a girl would want. The setting tends to be pretty, fields, singing birds, flowers, then there's the cave; the dark place where the evil lives.

  6. A battle between good and evil involving monsters and magic make a fairy tale a fairy tale. There is always an wise old man who guides the younger main character through his journey. The young main character is also part of a group fighting for the same cause. All of the good characters are good looking, while the evil characters are really ugly. The setting is usually set in the past and there are castles and stuff.

The setting almost always has the feel of a medieval setting. There are a lot of fairy tales that are based in the woods also.

  18. Fairy Tales usually involve midevil fantasy settings. Their dynamic of characters are either good or evil, there is no in between. The evil characters tend to be evil sorcerers. While the good characters seem to be princes in their effort to rescue a princess. They tend to surpass many obstacles set by the bad guy. In the end they always have a theme to teach a lesson.

  23. When I read fairy tales I always notice at the beginning of the story it says "One upon a time." Also there's always a beautiful princess and always a handsome prince. And there's always little characters in it such as elves, talking animals, witches or fairies. That is what I think of fairy tales.

  33. Fairy tales do begin with "Once upon a time" and end with "They lived happily ever after." I don’t believe that fairy tales have to happen long ago, their can be made up fairy tales from not that long ago. I agree that most fairy tales have talking animals, witches or fairies.
